Boomers on the Edge
Before smartphones. Before social media. Before anyone thought to record the evidence.
Boomers on the Edge is a weekly storytelling podcast where two lifelong friends revisit the wild, reckless, and often unbelievable adventures of their youth. Kenn and Ron trade stories from the 60s, 70s, and 80s — the mischief, the bad decisions, and the close calls that somehow didn’t kill them.
From gritty Detroit bars and summer days on the lake to high school locker rooms and blue-collar job sites, every episode blends sharp improv, vivid memories, and outrageous true tales.
It’s unfiltered nostalgia — raw, irreverent, and laugh-out-loud funny.
If you like your comedy honest, slightly inappropriate, and full of “there’s no way that really happened” moments… welcome to the edge.

Ron shares another classic 1980s business trip that quickly goes off the rails.
While attending training in Atlanta, Ron's buddy Andy convinces him they have to visit the notorious Big Daddy's Plantation Bar. With no rental car and too cheap to take a taxi, they decide riding MARTA across Atlanta is a great idea. What could possibly go wrong?
The bar is everything they hoped for—until Andy disappears into the crowd and later reappears drunk with two women from Sweden who offer to drive them back to the train station.
If you've listened to Boomers on the Edge, you know that's when the real adventure begins.
A supermarket stop, a handgun discovered in the glove compartment, getting thrown out of the car, a late-night MARTA ride through Atlanta, and an intimidating stranger demanding money all combine to make this one unforgettable night.
Against all odds, Ron and Andy make it back safely—barely.
Just another perfectly normal evening on Boomers on the Edge!

Hey, and welcome to Boomers on the Edge. Some guys in their 60s who still think they're 16. Your host, Ken and Ron. Let's get started.
SPEAKER_00Hey Ron, I like the music. Pretty uplifting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's supposed to be uplifting southern top rock.
SPEAKER_00Well, we hope our listening audience is feeling uplifted by the music. I hope so. Does it feel southern? Yeah, it kind of does. Okay. A little southern vibe. But I'm thinking about like the mutiny, our episode on the mutiny. That wasn't in the south. That was Austin. It's in the east coast, northeast area. New Hampshire. And uh, but you have some stories about when you were on the road with the guys when you were in sales.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have another work story.
SPEAKER_00And something happened in the South.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it did. It was uh in the Atlanta area. Hot Atlanta. Very uh you mentioned uh the mutiny, but it's very similar to the mutiny in that I was with another buddy from work uh and got a bunch of trouble. No, okay, no, this is a different guy. We'll call him uh Andy. We'll call him Andy. Okay, Andy's good. We'll call him Andy. So one thing I want to say about Andy is he is the straightest lace guy that you'd ever meet in your life. Like you would never think he would do crazy crap when he goes out of town. And this story I'm gonna tell is a uh late 80s story, okay? And what he would do when he'd get out of town with the guys, I remember one time we were in Boston and we're walking down the street, and there's about 10 of us, and we had just had a dinner or something, and we were trying to walk back to the hotel or something.
SPEAKER_00And the next thing you know, you know how if you've ever been there was a was there a little drinking going on?
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's the 80s, yeah. Of course. So if you've never been to Boston, at least in that era, all there ever seemed to be was scaffolding all over the place. Oh, yeah. Everything was under construction, okay. I don't know, has they ever finished that city? I don't, I don't know. I think it must always be under construction, okay? So there was all this scaffolding, and all of a sudden it's dark. Picture this dark, you know, it's like probably at least 10 o'clock at night. And the next thing you say are like, Where'd Andy go? And like, hey man, and you look up in the scaffolding, he's like three stories up on his scaffolding. Not good. Like, get down. What is wrong with why? What is it with you when you get out of town?
SPEAKER_00And he's a little inebriated in the way.
SPEAKER_01And just you know, just for everybody, I don't know if they've experienced this, but there's certain guys that get out of town, they're not even the same person, okay? And so it's like, get down from there, you're gonna get killed. So that just gives you an idea. And so this wasn't a one-time deal, okay? It's like you had to babysit him when he was gone. No, no, I mean, just you just knew like keep an eye on him, well, yeah, like a kid where you have to keep an eye on him, grab him, go grab him. He's getting on the Empire State Building or something. It's like get him down. So one time, there weren't 10 other guys with me. This is in the this now is down in Atlanta, Atlanta. And we had to go to some kind of training or something, and similar to my buddy, you know, uh, like you said in the mutiny, yeah. So he's like, damn, let's go party. Okay. Okay, I'm like, okay, I'll tell you what, we can go over to a club. Uh it's uh uh that would be fine. We'll go over to a club. You knew about this club? No, no, no, no, no. He picked one out, and I I'm gonna uh I don't even remember the name of it to be honest with you, but I'm gonna call it Big Daddy's, okay?
SPEAKER_00But it wasn't an alternative lifestyle now, no, definitely wasn't. Oh good.
SPEAKER_01So he, you know, I the I the one thing I have to admit I missed from the 80s is they would have these dance places. Well, maybe it's because I'm maybe they still have them, but I'm you know an old you know, boomer now. Geezer, you know, geezer, so I don't get to go to them, but they would have all these places we would go to, it would be pretty cool, and so he he it was like some southern name, and it was like it looked like an old um uh you know plantation plantation home kind of a kind of thing, yeah. And it was like Big Daddy's or something, okay. So he's like, Man, we gotta go to Big Daddy's. I'm like, where the ham is that? Okay, and so I don't know where, like, I don't know Atlanta to this day. I still don't know Atlanta, but let's just say if we were in uh let's just picture Atlanta in the middle, yes, and we're in a suburb way out to the east or west. Yeah, and Big Daddy's, of course, is on the other end of the metro area. Are you following us? Yeah, so like if you were uh since I know Detroit, if you were in Detroit, you would be going, you know, I don't know, from uh Auburn Hills all the way down to the you know, downriver or something. Yeah, you guys drove very far in the mutiny. No, no, no, that's in the mutiny, you drove like 90 miles. Yes, well, this is similar, but it has a whole different twist. A whole different twist, okay? So it uh they have something called, I don't know to this day why they call it the Marta. I don't even I think it's called the Marta. Marta doesn't make sense to me, but it's the basically the the subway, okay?
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And we're cheapskates and we don't have a rental car, and nobody gave us rental cars. So we were having training at a hotel, yeah, but the Marta ran right up to the hotel, okay. So he's like, we can get in the Marta and go over to Big Daddy's over on the other side of, you know. I'm like, that's like that's like taking the subway. Like, I don't however long you can take the subway in Atlanta, and this story is you know from the 80s, so I don't, and maybe things are totally different today. I don't know. I'm like, what do you want to do? He's like, we don't even have to get a car, we don't have to get a taxi, we're gonna. Because this is pre-Uber. Oh, no, Uber. You didn't have any cell phones. Come on. Nothing like that. That's part of the story, too. So I'm like, okay, fine, I'll go with you, you know. So we go over there because some of these bars were cool to see. So picture something that looks like a plantation uh home, but it's like this bar, like it's a multi-layer bar that it had like three levels, and the dance floor is in the middle. Yeah, but like you could look up and it looked like a home with like you, you know what I'm trying to say? Like like there's balconies, balconies and all this stuff, and fancy stairways going up. Yeah, exactly. Stairways to get to the different levels, chicks dancing. The place is kind of a white, cool looking old plantation-looking place as you pull up. Place is happening, okay. Okay, so we ride, we ride the stupid Marta all the way.
SPEAKER_00Let me just tell you guys what Marta stands for. Okay, okay. So you're looking it up on the back. I did look it up. Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so you know that I'm telling a true story.
SPEAKER_00It's a true story, like we always say. So we don't make it up.
SPEAKER_01I remember it's etched in my brain, okay? So we ride this Marta all the way over. Now keep in mind, when we ride it over the first way to get there, it was light. You follow what I'm saying? Yeah. Like we started, let's say we started at seven, eight o'clock, okay?
SPEAKER_00Does it have closing hours? Well, that's part of the story.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, okay. So we we ride the Marta all the way over to Big Daddy's, okay? Plantation or whatever it was called. Okay. Okay, we'll call it Big Daddy's plantation. And we get there, and everything's cool. And things are happening, and I mean, it's happening, it's it's 80s happening, okay. I mean, the the place is hopping. It's packed. It's like a Thursday night or something, okay.
SPEAKER_00A little drinking going on. Oh, Jesus.
SPEAKER_01All these levels, and these people are hanging, how hanging over the um balconies? The balconies, okay? Yeah. I mean, hundreds of people at this place. This place is total happening. Okay. Lots of chicks. Right, rights of chicks. I go to get a I go get a beer, I give him, we get a beer, we're hanging, you know, we're hanging. Keep in mind, no cell phones, no Ubers, all the stuff you just said. Right. Okay. Well, what did we say earlier about this story about Andy? Andy's a little gets a little carried away. He's gone. Oh, guess what? Andy's gone. Okay, now he's disappeared. Andy's disappeared. Okay. I now spend, I'm like, how long am I gonna look for Andy? Okay, this place is packed multi-level, okay?
SPEAKER_00Like, if he gets in trouble or something like that, you're not gonna be in trouble, are you? Are you his boss? Well, no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like, okay, I don't know where he is. Now I don't know where he is. So I'm trying to just, I'm not really here like doing anything. I was just gonna hang and you know, look at the girls, okay? Observe. And um, so for 45 minutes, I try to find him. Wow. Okay. I finally find him. I'd be a little pissed. I was mad, okay, because there's no cell phones, no texting, none of that. Okay. So I find him. There he is. And keep in mind. In those days, I don't know why. We thought we had to wear our suits to everything and everything. So we're like dressed in suits and ties and stuff, okay? And we're out at like because people were dressed up, you know. It's like boom, ding-de-boom, ching-de-boom, I'm like, there it is. Are they dancing? He's got two chicks, okay, one in each arm.
SPEAKER_00Now we don't say chicks disparagingly.
SPEAKER_01No, just as a nine, yeah.
SPEAKER_00If you said chicks, if you rose to the chick level status, that was a good thing.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah. Good-looking women, babes, blonde babes, and he's like, It's Olga and a mogah. I don't know what the hell their name was. Ingrid and an Olga. I'm like, what? He goes, Yeah. Come on, man. You know, they used to call me Cadman over there. I'm like, yeah, whatever. I go, he goes, we're going with them. I'm like, going. I'm going. And what are you talking about? He goes, they're gonna, you know, they're gonna drive us over to the Marta. I'm like, so we don't have to walk? Yeah. Sounds like a good one. I'm like, okay, that's all right, maybe I'll go. You know, maybe I'll have famous last words. Don't, don't, don't ever do this, kids, if you ever get in this situation, okay? So picture this place is close to a strip, like stores with grocery stores and stuff. Strip mall, yeah. Yeah, he goes, but we gotta go with Olga and I can't remember when Olga, whatever the other one's name was. He's they're both Swedish. He goes, They're Swedish, they're Swedish. And I'm like, what? He goes, yeah. So he goes, but we gotta go. They told us that before they can drive us over to the Marta, we gotta we gotta go to the grocery store right over here. Down, we could just walk down to it. And I'm like, I guess. So we were walking in the grocery store. Okay.
SPEAKER_00And these chicks look great.
SPEAKER_01They're models, okay. Okay, and he's like, he's he's drunk as hell, okay. And he's like, hey, and they're carrying those little, you know, I don't know if they do that here, but down south it had those little, like instead of a cart, they had like these little things like a basket. Like a basket you could put your groceries in or little things, you know, like four or five items. This is like this is what he does in the grocery store. He's walking with her, like saying stupid crap the whole way, and then he goes, Hey, Cadman, look at here. And I'm like, what? He goes, Look what she's got in here. Two juice and a douche. Oh no. I'm like, what? You're crazy. Can we go? Can we go? Wow. Okay. So we get in this little mini piece of crap car with these two girls. One girl's next to me, yeah, and he's up front. They're gonna drive us to the Marta now, okay?
SPEAKER_00Wait, wait, there was no quest for the breast going on here.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what his quest was. I just wanted to you weren't questing the breast. I just wanted to get to the marta. Because you wanted to get back. People are probably wondering, well, why didn't you just call Uber? Well, because I didn't have a cell phone and there was no Uber. See the kids, the kids today, the younger kids. You could have got a taxi, but I would have had to spend probably $200 on a taxi from one town and one side to Atlanta to the other. Okay. And I'm like, I'm not doing that because of him. And so now it's getting late. And you got to work in the morning. Well, we somehow had a schedule for the Marta, and we found out that they're like, well, the Mar, they tell us the Marta doesn't come. Uh we're at the end of the Marta run, okay? Right. There's only like 15 minutes to the Marta, like, is gonna come, and that's the end of it, okay? So then we're riding in this car, and he starts going through her uh glove compartment of her car. She's like, get out of there, you know, guess what? You know, she's got like this Swedish accent thing going, get it out of there, and and he pulls a gun out and he's swinging it around. Look at me, look at me, and I'm like, What the hell? Put that away. Now they're pissed. Okay, I'd be pissed. He does finally put it away and they shove us out of the car. They tell us, get out, and they slam the brakes on. We need no Mara, we're not taking your Martha, you know, yeah, and he's like, now he's telling me, get out of here, Ingrid. You know, no, he's I don't need your juice to do it. Now we gotta get to the stupid martyr that we can kind of see. And you can hear the thing coming, you know, like whatever, you know, it's coming. We'll run into the damn thing, and we jump on it just in time. Okay. Oh boy. That's now we get on a thing. Now, I just want to say this. Again, I want to say you're riding from one suburb through the city all the way back to some hotels that are where we were taking the training, okay? At like one o'clock in the morning. Okay. So here we're going, you know, we're going along, and you know, maybe a person would get on and we'd have a stop and then another stop and another stop and another stop. We, I want you to picture this, is kind of it was kind of winter time, okay, it was colder. So we had like trench coats, the typical 80s sales guy looked the trench coat with a suit and tie. Okay. We're riding along. All of a sudden, this guy gets on. Everything's fine, kinda. Kind of look a little sketchy. And Andy decides. He goes, hey brother. Can you help me?
SPEAKER_00I'm lost. Oh, that's good. That's good.
SPEAKER_01You know how there's a map on the side of the subway? Like which stop should I be going to? I'm like, you are an idiot. You must have a suit, you know, like a suicide pack on these trips. Okay. I'm like, oh my god. So then the guy he he he's like, yeah, yeah, man. Uh I guess I could help you, but uh why don't you give me some money first? And we're like, so now we decide we're gonna do our best impression of a uh of a police officer. Like you have a gun. I've done this now in two different scenarios, and I could tell another story that involved my brother, where I actually pulled this off and didn't get killed. So now there's two of us with trench coats and suits trying to act like we're police.
SPEAKER_00And there's a stare at him. Do you think he can sense that you're drunk?
SPEAKER_01Well, maybe the guy asking him if he needs some help and he's lost, okay? Yeah. So I'm standing there like, okay, here we go. And we're like, nah, no. You go, uh, and I can't give you any help. And I'm like, oh, thank you know, I'm thinking I might get stabbed, I might get shot, I don't know. So thank God the Marta stops again. And I'm like, is he gonna get off or isn't he? Because it's just us in this big thing, okay? He got off, thank God. And then we we like rode pretty carefree to the rest of the trip. I'm like, what is wrong with you? You know? And we finally got to the stop where we got towards close enough for the hotel that we could walk back. And it's funny, but every time when I, you know, I used to tell a lot of these stories at work, right? Yeah, and he'd be like, and if you saw him in the office, he's the straightest dude ever. Absolutely straight as dude, absolutely great family guy, does not cheat on his wife, doesn't do any of those things, but he'd go like crazy, like almost like dangerous stuff. Yeah, more dangerous than been sexual kind of thing. Yeah, and and I don't know what it was. And uh he'd be like, Is he over there telling that story again about the Marta? It was that's all exaggerated, none of that happened, you know. It's like, yes, it did. Yeah. So that's my Marta story. That guy probably know if you've ever heard that.
SPEAKER_00I did not. Yeah, I did not, but I was thinking while you were telling that story, that guy probably would not, you know, in our episode called Bachelor Party Prep, he probably would not have wanted to go with you down to eight south of eight mile or eight miles.
SPEAKER_01He might have been at the bachelor party.
SPEAKER_00But he didn't work on the prep part of it, no, no, no, no. Where you had to go and put in the you know, it was a little sketchy for us going down there at night.
SPEAKER_01But this the thing that was always interesting about uh Andy, as we're calling him, is uh he it kind of like a little bit of danger, like But he wasn't the guy with red hair.
SPEAKER_00No, no, that's another guy. You gotta listen to Bachelor Party Prep. Not that guy. So anyway, that's the uh that is the uh Big Daddy's uh and I know because I know you that when that guy said that to that dude, you know, we're lost. You probably all kinds of flags went up in your mind, like, oh, that was the dumbest thing.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that was the completely the dumbest thing. Because then he wanted money and yeah, you know, and so we just decided just to we it was a standoff. Yeah, it was a standoff.
SPEAKER_00Well, interesting. Thanks for sharing. All right, and thanks for listening.
SPEAKER_01See you guys. Hey, thanks for joining us here on Boomers on the Edge. We hope you'll join us again. And until then, have a great time. Thank you.
