Boomers on the Edge
Before smartphones. Before social media. Before anyone thought to record the evidence.
Boomers on the Edge is a weekly storytelling podcast where two lifelong friends revisit the wild, reckless, and often unbelievable adventures of their youth. Kenn and Ron trade stories from the 60s, 70s, and 80s — the mischief, the bad decisions, and the close calls that somehow didn’t kill them.
From gritty Detroit bars and summer days on the lake to high school locker rooms and blue-collar job sites, every episode blends sharp improv, vivid memories, and outrageous true tales.
It’s unfiltered nostalgia — raw, irreverent, and laugh-out-loud funny.
If you like your comedy honest, slightly inappropriate, and full of “there’s no way that really happened” moments… welcome to the edge.

The Secretary Said What!

Guest host Randy is back with the crew, bringing along a classic (and slightly cringe-worthy) workplace story from the 1980s.
While managing a team project, Randy arranged for a vendor to host a lunch and present their product. During an internal meeting, he asked his secretary to let him know when the sales rep arrived. Not long after, she burst into the room in a panic, gesturing urgently. The issue? The sales representative had arrived—but the secretary was so thrown off by her being a little person that she awkwardly announced it in a way that stopped the room cold.
Unimpressed with the dramatics, Randy told her to send the guest in. The sales rep turned out to be a confident, personable professional—about four feet tall—who quickly put everyone at ease and invited the team out to lunch.
Things got even more memorable on the ride over. One of Randy’s team members offered to drive her in his pickup truck, but she needed a stack of phone books to see over the dashboard. Midway through the trip, a sharp turn sent her sliding off the stack and briefly disappearing under the dash—much to the shock (and later amusement) of the team following behind. Without missing a beat, the driver helped her back up, and they continued on.
By the time they reached the restaurant, everyone—including the sales rep—was laughing. Her professionalism and good humor left a lasting impression, and Randy’s team ultimately chose her product for their project.
It’s a funny, eye-opening snapshot of a different era—highlighting how workplace attitudes and social awareness have evolved over time.
A classic “Boomers on the Edge” throwback.

Hey, and welcome to Uber's on the edge. Some guys in their 60s who still think they're 60. Your host, Ken and Ron. And this week's guest host, my brother, Brandy. Let's get started.
SPEAKER_03Hey, Ron.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I like this music. What's it supposed to be conveying?
SPEAKER_01Well, this one's supposed to, it's called Elevator Ride. And, you know, it's a business, business-oriented. It's supposed to show a business office uh environment. And who was joining us today? My brother Randy, who's been on the show before. Hey, hello. We asked him to come in and tell some more of his uh his business stories.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he did have a business story that was rather, you know, humorous. And yeah, we're gonna let him share. Randy, take it away.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, thanks for having me, guys. And this story's actually late, late 1980s. And I was an engineering team leader at the time, and I was going to have a meeting in a conference room. And uh back then we used to call them secretaries, and now they're administrative assistants, so I'll be referring to her as the secretary. So I asked the secretary, I said, I'm expecting a vendor, which also now you can't call them vendors, they're suppliers. So back then I said, When the vendor comes in and asks for me, please interrupt my meeting and don't hesitate.
SPEAKER_02And wasn't there a plan that she was maybe gonna take you guys out as part of the deal?
SPEAKER_00I had a lot of engineers assembled in a meeting, and the plan was that the vendor was gonna come in and talk about her company and then take us to lunch. And so I made sure she's some kind of supplier, right? She's a supplier, important supplier we needed on the project. Also wanted to say in this story there's no intent here to uh disparage to make light or or make fun of uh small people, right? She was a little person, she's a we didn't know that at the time. It was unknown, right? But anyway, I'll get on with the story. So secretary, you know, the meetings are going about 20 minutes, and then all of a sudden there's a knock on the door, and I'm like, okay. I was hoping that the secretary just opened the door and up the meeting, right? And then there's another, very frantic, and I was like, Okay, what is going on? So I got up from the table and I went to the door, and the door was open just a few inches, and I see the secretary's face, and she's she's very alarmed and concerned, huh? Concerned, and I'm like, what's wrong? And she goes, Well, uh-huh, and I go, what? And she goes, There's a small dwarf in the lobby, opposed to a big one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and I go, I wonder what the difference is.
SPEAKER_00And I said, What did you say? And she goes, There's a small dwarf asking for you. And I go, so and she goes, but she's a small dwarf. And I go, is that the vendor? And she goes, Well, I think so. I said, Send her in. I was so upset that she's just like focused on I she I asked her originally just to interrupt and bring her in. So she comes in and she was, you know, quite small.
SPEAKER_03She's was she good looking?
SPEAKER_00She was pretty cute. Okay. That's important. Not really. As long as she was competent and she knew the you know, engineering, the business, I was happy. So she came in and she was under four feet tall. So she's very little person. And she comes in there and she's she's standing there talking about her company, and then all of a sudden she said, you know, we'll get into that more after lunch. Well, how about we I take you guys over there? Let's go to lunch. Let's go to lunch.
SPEAKER_01I was in sales, I get what she was like.
SPEAKER_00But then the salespeople, yeah, the emphasis was on the lunch, right?
SPEAKER_01So much that on the like, let's entertain, let's have, let's happen.
SPEAKER_00Were you guys allowed to drink during these lunches? Uh back then you could. Okay. And uh anyway, we didn't that day, but you could, and it was common back in the 80s, late 80s. Totally. So, anyway, she said, before we go to lunch, she goes, I have one request. She goes, Could somebody drive? Because I parked my car way down end of the parking lot, and it's hard for me, because she's you know, it takes her a long time to walk a couple hundred yards, and yeah, she's so tiny. And uh, she goes, I'd appreciate if one of you guys could drive if you got room in your car. And this one guy, uh George, he says, Oh, I've got room in my pickup truck. I'm driving alone. I said, Well, I'll drive the rest of us in my vehicle and I'll follow you, George, and you you drive her. Okay, and she goes, Oh, but do you have I got a request? And uh like, a request? And she says, Do you have any phone books or um you know, like a library of books nearby? Because she could see in our office area there was a bunch of books, and we go, Yes. Why? She goes, Well, I need those to sit on. Oh, okay. So she she goes, I want to be able to see over the dashboard. So it's a real problem. And she's laughing about it. She was a great sport, you know. So I go over there and I get a big stack of books, they're probably about 12 inches high. And so Jeff carries also George, George carried them over to the uh truck, and we get in there and he helps her get up in the truck and puts the books, and he's get she gets her seatbelt on, and I'm driving behind. Everything's good. And I had told him to go to this one restaurant, and when you go down to the main road, he was supposed to turn to the right. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00So we go down the road and I'm driving behind, and I'm see him, and of course, he goes to the light. And what's he do? He turns a sharp left, and he was supposed to turn right. Okay. Well, she was a foot up in the air on the books, and the books, there's not a lot of friction on a phone book, you know. Right. She's sitting on that. It's slippery. It's slippery. So as he turned, she disappeared.
SPEAKER_02So you guys can see this.
SPEAKER_00And we're behind. So you see, there originally were two at the same level, and all of a sudden, the one head on the passenger side disappears. And she he said, George said that she went underneath the dashboard. Oh like she slipped out and she went under there because she was so tiny. So his first reaction, you never see like a dog, it like lifts a puppy up by the neck with its teeth. Yeah, was to grab her. Well, he just grabbed her by like the back top of her coat that she had on, and he he said, I lifted her up with one hand, and we saw him from behind pick her up in the air, and then all of a sudden you see her go back on the seat, and now that there's his head way above, and then you could just see the top, barely the top of her head, because the books had disappeared. And you see her scrambling to get the uh seat belts on there. So we go to the restaurant, and when she she almost rolled out of the truck when she opened the door, and and she's cracking up because of all this these things that happened of her going underneath the dashboard and all.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00So we had lunch, and she was a great sport about the whole thing. And then we go back to the office and she talked about her company. And so, anyway, it was it was pretty comical.
SPEAKER_02Did you guys go with her company?
SPEAKER_00Uh, we ended up, yes. We did. And she she was a great vendor.
SPEAKER_03That's pretty funny. Yeah, it was pretty funny. And it's a real story. We're not making fun of anyone, just telling a story. The way it went down.
SPEAKER_01Thanks for listening. Hey, thanks for joining us here on Boomers on the Edge. We hope you'll join us again. And until then, have a great time. Thank you.
